Come and Visit Us

An attractive city with a glorious past, Jacmel will charm you in more than one way. Considered to be Haiti’s cultural capital, Jacmel was designated “creative city” by UNESCO in 2014. Indeed, this 319-year old town – whose motto is “Sursum corda”, which could be translated as “Lift up your hearts” – is the birthplace of many painters, musicians and writers, among the most famous in the country.

Its many cultural centers, art studios and rich heritage are proof of the creativity and know-how of Jacmel’s inhabitants.

The town is renowned for its carnival, which attracts each year thousands of visitors, both from Haiti and abroad. This popular celebration is held between two Holiday periods – New Year and Rara, well before Patron Saints Day and the “Champêtres”. The colourful costumes, papier-mâché masks and various other elements carefully created for the occasion make this carnival a unique attraction in the country.

Come and discover Jacmel’s wonderful natural areas. Grottoes, waterfalls and sunny beaches are only a few of the area’s major ecotourism attractions. And why not take a refreshing dip in the Bassin Bleu?

Jacmel is a lively and fun place. Stop in one of its many art galleries to see original work by the town’s artists and craftspeople – you’re bound to find something beautiful to take back home – or dance the night away in its inviting night clubs.
